Expert calls for change of Labor Law to improve employment
Jamshid Pajouyan, an instructor at the prestigious Allameh Tabatabaii University, said that workers have the erroneous impression that the Labor Law offers them strong protection.
“But this law is full of flaws, worst of all is that it hands over the responsibility of workers losing their job to their employers,” he said, adding that the law, in the first place, is responsible for many of the workers’ anguish.
“On the other hand, the present Labor Law has made employers less inclined to create jobs and invest,” he said, adding that the unemployment dilemma has been aggravated due to the defective law.
The expert further said that in other countries, social security systems usually take charge of unemployment-related affairs, whereas the same task has been delegated to employers in Iran.
He said the overall national economic productivity rate will continue to decline unless the Labor Law is amended.
The university professor called on the government to provide workers with greater social security protection.
Meanwhile, the Statistics Center of Iran reported Saturday that unemployment rate had declined to 11 %during April-June.
The center said that the rate came down by 1.1% against the figure for January-March.
It said some 41.4 %of the adult population was working this spring, showing a 0.2 %decline against the figure for the corresponding period the previous year.
However, it said, the rate is 1.7 %higher against that of winter of 2006.
The report indicated that more people worked in the agriculture sector this spring. It said the average 10-year unemployment rate is 11 percent.
